STANDARDS

As the sustainability of events becomes more sophisticated and many more events take on the concepts outlined in this book and other guides which are being published, certifications and standards will be also developed. The following are some of the certifications, standards and awards which are currently in play:

·      BS8901:2007 Specification for a Sustainable Event Management System
It offers a framework from within which an event manager can gauge the sustainable progress of their event. The standard comes under BS8900:2006 Guidance for Managing Sustainable Development.

·      Ecologo Events
The EcoLogoM Program certifies events that have a reduced impact on the environment. Events are evaluated and audited to ensure compliance with EcoLogoM criteria. These criteria reflect environmental leadership in terms of making an event environmentally sustainable, and encourage reduced environmental impacts. www.ecologo.org

·      Industry Green
The Industry Green mark (IG) has been developed in the UK by Julie's Bicycle. It is currently in pilot phase and is focussed on measured and committed carbon reductions at an event. www.juliesbicycle.com

AWARDS

·      A Greener Festival

The website A Greener Festival has established a system in the UK to assess the sustainability performance of festivals. They have a checklist which they measure events against. If they meet their standards, the festival is awarded the Greener Festival Award. The website is also an excellent forum for those in the industry wishing to share ideas around making their events more sustainable. www.agreenerfestival.com

·      Yourope Green n Clean Award

In 2006/7, Yourope, the European Festival Association, launched environmental guidelines for music festivals. The original printed booklet "Green'n'Clean" has been supplemented by a new online tool, providing festival organisers with customised environmental advice plus a Green'n'Clean Award for festivals who achieve a defined number of criteria in terms of environmental measures. www.yourope.org
